The action to initiate a Cervical Cancer Screening Program in Zenica-Doboj Canton and for the enhancement of the Oncologic Pole of the Zenica Hospital started in 2005 with funds from the Piedmont Region, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and CRT Foundations. The technical expertise was provided by doctors and nurses of the Oncology Network of Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta, in particular from the Molinette Hospital in Turin but involving staff from other Piedmont hospitals. Organizational and financial management, both in Italy and on the spot, was carried out by RE.TE.
The intervention consisted in the construction and renovation of hospital departments, the supply and commissioning of oncological equipment, training in Bosnia and Italy of technical and nursing staff .
Today, the Zenica Cantonal Hospital can offer an oncology and radiotherapy service, with beds for ordinary hospitalization, day hospital and outpatient facilities, as well as the necessary technical and scientific equipment for diagnosis and therapy.
A further phase of upgrading and training of Bosnian staff responsible for oncology services is underway and will be completed by mid-2018. It is also intended to examine the possibility of extending the services provided by the Zenica Hospital to other hospitals in Bosnia and Herzegovina; however, this action is subject to a clear political will by the Bosnian authorities and the availability of substantial funds from Italian and / or European donors to integrate local resources.
The results and the human experience of this long-term collaboration between institutions and Italian and Bosnian hospital staffs have been collected and disseminated through the book "Between Good and Evil: Bosnia, Post-war, Battle Against Cancers and pollution in Zenica" published by Infinito editions: here for more details.
